Just curious what kind of work this is. I worked for the Forest Service and am pretty skilled with trail building, but unless they are clearing brush or bringing in rock or dry soil to work with, this isn't likely to be a productive session.

Just got off the phone with FATTRAC's Andy Hegenderfer. He said they are equipped to do soil work, but are almost never allowed to do that kind of work as it requires an environmental impact statement. He will scout the trail a week or two ahead of time, but anticipates the work will be limited to brush clearing.

FYI, Andy suggested I might want to contact The American River Conservatory as they are currently building a South Fork trail starting at Skunk Hollow, and are doing a lot of soil work as well as putting in diversion culverts, small bridges, and water-bars.

The trail work is to maintain the existing trail. We will not be building any trails. Normally, it is hiking along the trail cutting back the brush. Also, incase you were wondering, you are not expected to handle any power tools. you may be asked to use hand tools, like lopers, handsaws, shovels, etc. If you are not comfortable using tools, conversation and a second set of eyes are always welcome.

Do we need to bring tools appropriate for this kind of work?
How about some gasoline and matches to clear that brush!
Oh sorry, that might also adversly impact the enviroment.

No Blaine, no matches. Road flares do a much better job. And if you mix some styrofoam in with the gas it burns hotter. :o)

I heard flares and coffee creamer make for a great brush clearing combination... (but dont try this at home kids..)

Is there much Poison Oak at this time of the year?

The PO looses it's leaves, but the shrub is still there and continues to have the toxic oils on it's outer surface. So even in the winter, you can get poison oak. I have some on my left leg now.

FATRAC will supply all the tools needed. May want to bring some gloves if you have any. There will be others there, not sure how many, but I suspect mostly from HW.

Fun social and working event. Lots of help and lots of great work by all those volunteers. Thanks to all who pitched in and made this a great time. Of course the SWAG at the end did not hurt either. haha

This was my first trail maintenance meetup, and it was awesome to see so many dedicated trail ridin' folks (kiddos too) moving dirt for the benefit of all. I was glad to help out and enjoyed chatting with several of you. Mucho Thanks to all who organized this event and brought the a.m. sustenance. Can't wait to get out and ride this trail again. Whoo hoo!

    1) With the number of people showing up and working, the load on each individual was minimal. 2) People pay good money for a gym membership to work out at. This was free. :-) 3) Great group of people. 4) Weather temp and soft soil made for perfect conditions to 'play in the dirt'. 5) Swag at the end was just the cherry on top!
