Quarry Trail Beginners MTB

Auburn Confluence (bridge to Cool) (map)

Selected By: A former member

Meet at the Confluence of the American River. From Auburn take HWY 49 towards Cool (Placerville) but do not cross bridge to Cool...continue straight 100-200 yards (on Old Forest Hill Rd) and park on either the left or right side in order to save the $10 fee for parking up at the Quarry. We roll out at 9:30 AM towards the Quarry so be sure to get there early enough to get your act together.
This ride is pretty much a beginner's ride. The ride is about 12-13 miles round trip. The road has a few single track areas and is used by hikers and equestrians. Drainage, which is an important consideration this time of year, is good. Some mud and small water crossings with virtually no baby heads sticking up in the trail (ok just a few). A few short challenging climbs, some sand and pea gravel. All of it next to the river which can be seen the whole trip. Light showers do not cancel ride...Rain does.
Helmets required! Additional items to bring...Hydration bag (especially with horses using trail), Food (bars and gel good), spare tubes, tire pump, patch kit, multi-tool, tire levers. Bring layers of clothing with you and a place to carry it when in warms up.
We don't want this to be your first ride. This trail is not difficult to manuveur and is as wide as a single vehicle lane,...but does take your breath away several times (sucking in air) as we climb and decend next to the river. You will burn many calories, need to eat and drink to make it out and back. So, beginners be in some condition before attempting this full route.
Beautiful ride. 1367 ft in 12.6miles...but easy non-technical trail. Beautiful views of the river and Forrest Hill Bridge.

Hey Nate, I'm hoping you didn't cancel the Sunday ride on my behalf... Take it easy while recovering and we will see you soon. Thanx for posting this ride.

If I have the energy, after the ride I may ride up Stagecoach - a little wider than Quarry Rd. with a two mile continuous climb. Then there's Upper Stagecoach, Flood, etc. Anyone who wants to tag along is welcome.

Don, I will join you for an extended ride up the road and thru the woods. May be able to talk Blaine into it as well.

Nate this will be my second ride with the group, but I have a triple and disc brakes, so I should be good - right?

SWEET! A ride with Phrotis. I will have to see how I feel after the quarry before deciding on Stagecoach, etc...

    Hey Phrotis,
With that setup you should be able to do some 3' drop offs and some crazy fast down hills.
    I'll point the way.
    Get the cameras ready!

Another alternative to a ride after quarry trail might be: confluence to Clementine Rd. rt on to Fuel Break down through tunnel then along the Am Rvr Confluence trail back to cars.

Take hiway 80 to Auburn area. Exit Elm Ave and make a LEFT at the light onto Elm. Make a LEFT at the next left just a block or two away. This left puts you on three different street names (don't blame me) which would be High St/193/49. Follow this street which curves to the right up a hill and go under a Railroad bridge and STRAIGHT through the stop light at Borland and Hiway 49. The road will now immediately go down hill and many curves for 2.5 miles to the river confluence.

DO NOT make a right to go over the bridge to Cool, but instead look for us all a few hundred yards straight ahead. If you look at a map and find Hiway 49 where it crosses the river, you can see the confluence (joining together) of the North and Middle Forks of the American River.

Hey Phred, can I borrow one of your bikes? I mean since you are loaning out bikes and all. And no need to crash my road ride, that will not be necessary (where have I heard that before?).

Lisa, I will try and remember to bring a photo to autograph for you.

Hey Phred, Phrotis needs that trike with the square wheels - it would go good with the clown suit, as long as it has SPD pedals to fit those big yellow shoes.
And Lisa, you can handle this ride if you can ride the hills on Shirland Tract. Just don't get going too fast on the downhills. There's some loose gravel, and you might get a speeding ticket - I think I saw a CHP out there on a horse once. Ha Ha.

I wondered if anyone knew how long this ride might take? I really want to do it but have a meeting in Auburn at 1:30pm. I don't plan on changing but my shoes so won't need to worry about that. If anyone knows...please let me know. Thanks so much!

I think about 2.5 hours tops... we'll be back at 12 noon or a tad earlier.
The ride can be done in 1.5 hours. We will stop at the turn around point and soak up the sun, enjoy the river and country views, eat a pwr bar and head back taking up to 1/2 hour. The last time we did this ride with all levels of riders, the time was 1 hour 35 min total plus the rest. It will be brisk going out as we will be in the shade the first 45 min. Optional ride after as well. You will have a good workout.
