That's right people - the Hammerin' Wheels MTBers are going to MOAB UTAH AGAIN!!!!
And it WON'T be Mother's Day weekend (Jeanette)
I'm posting the dates extra early so you can start planning and saving now! Plus, registration for cabins and cottages at Moab Valley RV Park (for 2011) just opened up on Sunday! Cottages in particular will go FAST, so if you're interested - reserve one now! You can cancel up to 3 days before and lose only $10.00 of your one-night deposit.
I'll be in Cottage CT-2. CT-1 was already reserved but the other 4 were still available as of Monday (Moab Valley RV park - (435) 259-4469). Our trip in May was amazing, so if you didn't go this spring - ask someone about it or check it out here - http://mtb.hammerinwh.... We'll be a lot more knowledgeable for next springs trip.
You should be a strong beginner or above rider with a good quality bike to make the most of this trip. Expected and recommended equipment for the trip will be discussed on the message board.
Plan to arrive in Moab on Saturday (5/14/11) and head home the following Friday (5/20/11). That's 6 nights in Moab. If you can't come with us for all the days - join us for some! We'll be staying at the Moab Valley RV Resort - which has cabins, RV & tent sites, a large pool and hot tub, "10" rated restrooms, laundry room, group meeting/BBQing pavillions, and a bike wash. Check it out - www.moabvalleyrv.com.
This will be a fun, cost effective way to visit and ride one of the countries premier off-road areas. If you share a cabin, it can cost only about $15.00 per night for lodging - and this includes full access to the RV Park and its facilities. We'll also be doing other stuff besides hanging out and riding (Hiking, Colorado River rafting, etc).
Since this event is so far off, most of our communication will take place on the "Message" Board. I'll be starting a Moab 2011 message thread soon!
There will be a lot more discussion and details, I just wanted to get this out for those who wanted to reserve cabins and cottages (before they're gone.... this is prime season for Moab).
Most people will probably be driving Kane. Bobby's right - it's not a 30-hour drive..... well, I guess it can be at about 30-mph ; ). It's about 14 with breaks. I'm sure some do it faster.
Kane, It also costs $300 to fly a bike. Unless you're planning on renting one there.
I meant both ways on the miles and time:) $500 is also the round trip cost. $300?--ouch The trip must be worth the money considering how popular Moab is for MTB.
Slickrock is a must! =) But I think Brian has a forum post for talking about all this; It's much better for following the conversation, posting pictures, etc. If not, He'll post one up soon.
The Tuesday we're there is a full moon. Perfect for doing Slickrock!
Yes, the only two I'd like to do again are Slickrock & Porcupine Rim (hopefully from the very top), and 2 new ones!
FYI. We left last year after the dinner Thursday night. Unfortunately I chose to take US 50 back. Well, we ran out of gas in Austin, Nevada. Two gas stations, they did not open 'til 6 am. It was cold and we could not run the car. We got there at 4 am. Bad choice. Next time I am sticking with US 80 to and from. Particularly if you drive at night. More gas stations and eating places if you need to stop.
I have a large cabin reserved, and at this point nobody has committed to going with me. I'm open to roomies if someone is interested?
I just joined the site today, I met a few of you at the meeting on Saturday. I am looking to go from Friday-Friday. I do not have any roomates yet or carpool mates but I am looking if anyone if interested. In additon to MTB, I would like to canyoneer, rafting, and rock climb as well. Pretty much up fro anything totally stoked to join! email ahutchinson@folsom.ca.us and cell is 916-990-6406 I have a Acura MDX seats plenty, willing to drive, but no bike rack yet.
Who is down to Canyoneer, raft, slackline and Rock Climb? Here is a link I found, any ideas or preferences? http://redriveradventures.com/utah-canyoneering/![]()

Hi All,
Last year to drove my rig with 3 other peeps and 4 bikes and shared a cottage with 2 others. Life was good. This year I will drive if others want to come with me. Otherwise, I'm hoping to hitch a ride with someone. Danette has a cottage reserved and if she can not go, it will pass to me. However, I do not want to share the expense alone. So I would be lookin for a roomy. If nothing pans out, I'll have to skip Moab this year. :( Anyone?
MOAB SHIRTS- WHO WANTS ONE??? See message board for more info. A Reply is requested. Mucho Thanks.
I'll take one long sleeve and one shor t sleeve in red please.
Mike n Barb n I are carpooling and staying together in C-2. We plan on leaving Friday morning and heading straight to Fruita. We will stay overnight in a motel and hit one trail on Saturday. After the ride on Saturday, we will head to Moab (only 1:45 away) and catch up with the gang at MoabValleyRV. We are in the process of planning out the rest of the trip....leaving Moab Friday morning and heading down to Hurricane or St. George, stay overnight at a motel and do Gooseberry Mesa on Saturday. Su
Sunday, at this moment is up in the air..probably head home.
How about Grand Junction Co for lodging...only 12 miles away..If you find a motel worthy of all those going..let us know
I have a cabin reserved if someone would like to take it over......
We will almost for sure take it over Trish. Put us first on your shortlist. Thanks.
Bobby and I have potential for f2 more passangers, and bikes, and we may be letting one cabin go, so let me know if interested. We will hold until last minute on the cottage
Making final arrangements for Kokopeli to UPS to LPS to Porcupine Rim Trail and singletrack. This is who I have down as doing this ride...Nate, Mike S., Bryan T., Marsh, Vida M., Aaron, Bobby McL, Dave C, Jim G, Scott C, ***I need responses from Sandie, Jenette, Barb, Brian, Don M, Kevin G, this trail is not Easy..check out the YouTube videos. If you don't see your name included..get back to me now. FINAL CALL for Shuttle..ALL ABOARD
It's only 14.75 miles :) ok...about 25 miles dropping about 6500' and climbing only 900-1000' probably 5 hours. Going downhill as much as this trail does, I don't know if you would be holding us up. We need to see you in action on the first three trails we do. The good news here is you will have Horsethief Bench, Baby Steps/Klondike, and Slickrock behind you...your skill will improve as you ride.
GREAT...Sandie is on the shuttle!!!
I need more feed back from the group, don't want to hold you guys up on the fun downhill. I won't take it personally at all if you want me opting out, Barb you going?
Jeannette and I decided to opt out. Have a great time.
Please consider that regret is the result of thing that you avoid, not things that you do. Go for broke! Challenge yourself! That is what this trip is about, anyway.
Marsh I almost opted back in when you through down the gauntlet, but now that I'm thinking about it "go for broke" could have an omnious outcome, broken arm, leg, I don't want to even think about something worse than that.
Concerns like those are better left to the roadies, who sustain far more and more severe injuries.
Done...the van holds 14 we are now at 13.
Those going to Moab - please e-mail me your cell phone #'s ASAP. I'll forward the list of #'s to those going. Saturday's agenda - arrive at the Moab Valley RV Resort (various times), Group BBQ @ 6pm b/t cottages #2 & 3, Hot Tub after dinner, Night Cap/Discuss Sunday's ride over drinks (b/t cottages #2 & 3).
All y'all have a ton a fun out there and ride safe! Try to keep Vida off the 50' gap jumps! :P
Still awaiting cell #'s from Marsh, Jeanette, Bobby, Barbara/Mike, Kevin, and Don. Thanks!
Hey everyone, sorry I haven't been on here in awhile and the emails were going to an old addy. I am not making the trip as I am closing escrow in a cpl days and thus am very busy with everything that comes with that.
If anyone still needs a cabin, let me know and I will give my reservation to them, otherwise I am going to cancel it. You can get ahold of me at Kevin.gorchinski@gmail.com
Have fun everyone!
I would like to get everyone's cell # number as well. If you are so inclined to share it. :))
Good idea on Cell #. Mines (916) 743-0333.
